Instagram post 2161255269819280206_5846749835 Today's LGBTQ+ Trailblazer Profile is Keith Haring.

Keith Haring was born on May 4, 1958, in Reading, Pennsylvania, and was raised in nearby Kutztown, Pennsylvania. He developed a love for drawing at a very early age, learning basic cartooning skills from his father and from the popular culture around him, such as Dr. Seuss and Walt Disney.

Throughout his career, Haring devoted much of his time to public works, which often carried social messages. He produced more than 50 public artworks between 1982 and 1989, in dozens of cities around the world, many of which were created for charities, hospitals, children’s daycare centers, and orphanages. The now-famous Crack is Wack mural of 1986 has become a landmark along New York’s FDR Drive. Other projects include; a mural created for the 100th anniversary of the Statue of Liberty in 1986, on which Haring worked with 900 children; a mural on the exterior of Necker Children’s Hospital in Paris, France in 1987; and a mural painted on the western side of the Berlin Wall three years before its fall. Haring also held drawing workshops for children in schools and museums in New York, Amsterdam, London, Tokyo and Bordeaux, and produced imagery for many literacy programs and other public service campaigns.

Haring was diagnosed with AIDS in 1988. In 1989, he established the Keith Haring Foundation, its mandate being to provide funding and imagery to AIDS organizations and children’s programs, and to expand the audience for Haring’s work through exhibitions, publications and the licensing of his images. Haring enlisted his imagery during the last years of his life to speak about his own illness and generate activism and awareness about AIDS.

Keith Haring died of AIDS-related complications at the age of 31 on February 16, 1990.

Instagram post 2159674251287160372_5846749835 Today's LGBTQ+ trailblazer profile is Larry Kramer.

Larry Kramer (born June 25, 1935) is an American playwright, author, film producer, public health advocate, and LGBT rights activist. He began his career rewriting scripts while working for Columbia Pictures, which led him to London where he worked with United Artists. There he wrote the screenplay for the 1969 film Women in Love (1969) and earned an Academy Award nomination for his work.

Kramer witnessed the spread of the disease later known as Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) among his friends in 1980. He co-founded the Gay Men's Health Crisis (GMHC), which has become the world's largest private organization assisting people living with AIDS. Kramer grew frustrated with bureaucratic paralysis and the apathy of gay men to the AIDS crisis and wished to engage in further action than the social services GMHC provided. He expressed his frustration by writing a play titled The Normal Heart, produced at The Public Theater in New York City in 1985, that would later be made into a feature film starring Mark Ruffalo. His political activism continued with the founding of the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP) in 1987, an influential direct action protest organization with the aim of gaining more public action to fight the AIDS crisis. ACT UP has been widely credited with changing public health policy and the perception of people living with AIDS (PWAs), and with raising awareness of HIV and AIDS-related diseases. Kramer has been a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for his play The Destiny of Me (1992), and he is a two-time recipient of the Obie Award. -via Wikipedia

At the age of 83, Larry's dedication to patient rights marches on: https://www.statnews.com/2018/08/29/larry-kramer-aids-gilead-nih-fda/

Instagram post 2154641106124841875_5846749835 Exactly 42 years after the event that made him famous, today's LGBTQ+ trailblazer profile is Thom Higgins. "The biggest moment of 1977 involved former beauty queen, singer, and Florida orange juice spokeswoman Anita Bryant, who created the “Save Our Children” campaign in Miami, a Christian coalition purporting to protect young people from recruitment by gay and lesbian sexual predators. Bryant, who had referred to gays as “human garbage,” was speaking about how to “do away with the homosexuals” at a televised press conference in Des Moines, Iowa, when young activist Thom Higgins smashed a pie in her face. Humiliated – and eager to perform the victim role – a tearful Bryant proceeded to pray for Higgins’s soul, voice cracking, after getting in her dig, “at least it was a fruit pie.” The playful, zany, Vaudevillian act of pie-throwing was a way to turn a villain into a joke. Bryant never changed her stance on gay rights, but her political influence and career both dissolved in the subsequent years." - via @smithsonianmagazine

Instagram post 2153116586100474729_5846749835 Today's LGBTQ+ trailblazer profile is Aaron Fricke. 👬 "Aaron Fricke is an American gay rights activist and author. He was born on January 25, 1962, in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. He is best known for the pivotal case in which he won his first amendment legal right to attend his prom. Shortly after he came out in 1980, Fricke began seeing another male student. Fricke decided to bring him as his date to the prom. When the high school informed Fricke he could not bring him to the prom, he filed suit in U.S. District court. The presiding judge, Raymond J. Pettine, ruled in Fricke's favor, ordering the school to not only allow him and his partner to attend as a couple but also to provide enough security to ensure their safety. The case received considerable media attention, and news camera crews filmed and interviewed the couple at the dance." -via Wikipedia
